Why Comprehensive Sex Education is Better Than Abstinence-Only Programs

Some schools teach “abstinence-only” programs, where students are simply told not to have sex until marriage. While this approach may sound safe, studies show it is less effective.

Abstinence-only education often leaves students unprepared if they do choose to be sexually active. It avoids important topics like contraception, consent, or sexual orientation.

On the other hand, comprehensive sex education provides full knowledge: how to stay safe, how to respect boundaries, and how to make informed choices. Research shows that students in comprehensive programs are more likely to delay sexual activity and use protection when they do engage.

Simply saying “don’t do it” is not education. Empowering students with complete knowledge is the smarter, safer, and healthier path.
